Gelato in Indiana!

12 Mar

Yes, it’s true!  We heard about it a little while ago, but scarcely dared to believe it.  Finally, this weekend, we drove up to Clay Terrace in Carmel to check out Gelato Da Vinci ourselves.  And it’s twoo, it’s twoo!  Perhaps not up to Florentine standards, but perfectly passable gelato, right here in Indiana. How exciting is that?

We had to try the chocolate, of course, as that’s our standard. Not the best we’ve had, of course, but not the worst, either (and this is compared to gelato around Italy, so “not the worst” is actually pretty high praise). We also tried the rose (not as intense as Fenoccio’s, but not bad at all), the “love affair” (Tia Maria and coconut) and the “Italian kiss” (bacio, which is basically nutella). But the standout was the creme brulee. Excellent! Definitely a flavor to go back for.

Afterward, we tried a scoop of the blueberry sorbet, mostly out of curiousity, and it was okay, but if I hadn’t seen the sign, I might have guessed it was raspberry.

Clearly we’ll need to go back for further research–though if anyone knows of any other gelaterias in Indiana, please share!

–Brenda 🙂

I usually like creamy ice cream, say, Japanese Cherry Blossom or Lavender ice cream but sometimes a nice lemon or lime gelato is just the thing when its super hot in summer at the beach.

Thanks for the comment, and for the link! It just happens that Bethany and I are heading to Japan in a couple of weeks to visit Dawn, and we plan to sample as much ice cream while there as possible. Of course, we’ll be reporting back!

    Brenda,

Palazzolo’s true Artisan Gelato & Sorbetto is now available in Indianapolis, In. Palazzolo’s is made from the original butter milk base you find in Italy. Palazzolo’s does not use the paste, gels or powders that the local gelato maker uses at Clay Terrace. That is an oil based gelato, not butter milk. There is a big difference.
It is now available at Goose the Market located at 2504 N Delaware, Constantino’s Market Place at the down town city market and Mama Bears Cafe at Geist in Fishers Indiana. It was also featured in Oprah’s Summer Magizine of 2004 .
This is what true Italian Gelato taste like. Try the Banana Caramel Praline, Toasted Coconut Almond Fudge or Pistachio Gelato to name a few. Palazzolo’s has over 600 flavors . Hope you enjoy Palazolo’s has much as we do. Truly the very best Artisan Gelato & Sorbetto made!

Glad to have found this blog. I will have to try to find the gelaterias in Indy when I’m there. I hadn’t found any before. Now, for your next adventure, try our homemade gelato in Evansville. My sisters and I opened Jeanne’s Gelato & More four years ago. Our gelato is homemade, made from real ingredients not artificial flavors. Everyone loves our variety of flavors and seasonal highlights. Right now for the winter and holiday season, you can find Peppermint, Rum Raisin, Gingerbread and Eggnog. We too enjoy Palazzolo’s Turkish Roast which will be the only one purchased occassionally. Check out our Facebook page and come see us sometime. We also serve meals, cakes, pies, cannolis, and italian cream sodas.

Ron, thanks so much for that info! Needless to say, Palazzolo’s is now on our list of Must Try places! We’ll report back once we’ve visited, which will be very soon.

Apologies for my delay responding, by the way. Bethany and I were both in Japan visiting Dawn and, of course, sampling a bit of ice cream along the way. We found that they’re much more into soft serve than hand-dipped, though we found both. We also found gelato (once) but it was, sadly, substandard. More detail in a separate post!

Hmph. Ron, your post implied Palazzolo’s was already available at the places you listed, but today we made a special trip out to Geist and the folks at Mama Bear’s said they don’t have it yet, though they expect to soon–maybe by this weekend. We’ll call ahead before making the drive again, though.

Mama Bears finally received there Italian Gelato case Friday May 16th in the afternoon. It was scheduled to arrive Monday May 12th but was delayed by the shipping company for what ever reason. Sorry!
We filled it Saturday morning and they were selling gelato by 9:30am. They now have
Banana Caramel Praline, Tahitian Vanilla, Creme de Mint, Dark Chocolate Chunk, Italian Pistachio, Mixed Berry, Peanut Butter Cup, Toasted Coconut Almond Fudge, Fresh Strawberry and for coffee lovers,Turkish Roast espresso bean.
I have to say, I tasted all of them and they are all fantastic. I do hope you will try Mama Bears again and if you have a favorite flavor, please let me know and I will order it in for you!

I was doing a search for Turkish Roast Coffee Gelato to try and find more places that carry this gelato. I had it for the first time at Cuppy’s Coffee in the Hamilton Town Square Mall across from Qudoba. It was so good and I have been craving it since. I would really like to know if I can buy this in a more economical and larger portion to take home? Has anyone seen this anywhere else ?
I live in the Fishers/Castleton area and would like to know of other places that carry this flavor. Please feel free to email me.

    Thanks

We, too, sell the same Turkish Roast at Jeanne’s Gelato & More in Evansville, Indiana because it is SO good and I cannot re create it! We make many of our own flavors and some with ingredients from Pregel, an italian based company. We will follow up with more info on our shop later. Til then, Happy Holidays!

Does anyone know where Palazolo’s gelato is sold in Washington DC or Virginia? Or the Palazolo company address?
